Origin of Dentosophy

Since ancient times, eminent practitioners have considered the oral-facial apparatus as part of the entire organism and have oriented their experiments and practice in this direction.

Their search for the improvement of the quality of care, reinforced by their helplessness in the face of the distress of some patients, will lead these two dental surgeons to become interested in these different approaches, systematically confront them with their own clinical experience, and put them in perspective with other medical and neurophysiological knowledge.

Their work was particularly initiated by the Professors René Soulet from the Faculty of Clermont-Ferrand, André Besombes from the Faculty of Paris, and Pedro Planas from the Faculty of Madrid.

IN 1953, the Professors René Soulet from the Faculty of Clermont-Ferrand and André Besombes from the Faculty of Paris presented for the first time an orthopedic functional device called "Soulet Besombes activateur-gouttière", intended for the correction of buccal dysmorphoses and addressed to a wide public.

AT THE SAME TIME, the Professor Pedro Planas from the Faculty of Madrid and then Barcelona, presented his track plates to the medical world and developed his theories on occlusal balance and the laws of development of the stomatognathic system (neuro-occlusal rehabilitation or NRO).

WITH REAL MEDICAL INTEREST, these methods, well developed at the beginning of the 1960s (see the 1961 Congress of the French Society of Orthopedics), were totally abandoned later.

OUR PERSONAL RESEARCH for the improvement of the quality of care led us to meet successively the Professors Besombes (in 1984), Planas (in 1989), as well as Madame Béatriz Padovan (Sao Paulo) and her neuro-functional reorganization (in 1990). These meetings were an extraordinary opening in the practice of our Art. They were decisive for us, perfectly in harmony with our quest for a better understanding of the human being.

FOR THE PAST THIRTY YEARS, encouraged by the growing interest of patients in new therapeutic approaches, we have applied these methods to hundreds of people with surprising results:

WORKING IN THIS WAY, we became aware of the totality of the human being and were able to make the inevitable and yet generally hidden link between the mouth and the rest of the physical, organic, and psycho-affective body. When more than 70% of children have a structural pathology (class II) at the buccal level (official report of a study conducted in France), it is no longer possible to content ourselves with treating symptoms, but we must propose a fundamental reflection and take care of the patient and their social and cultural environment* and not just a tooth. Dental art becomes truly an expansion of the art of healing.

THIS SPECIFIC APPROACH establishing a new relationship between therapist and patient founds an original dental therapy method called: DENTOSOPHIE. By bringing together "dens", the tooth, and "sophia", wisdom, this name carries within it the hope and ambition that one day, "man listens to the mouth speak of man". Far from shaping man in the image of dentistry, we must develop dentistry in the image of man.
