What is Dentosophy?
Dentosophy is originally a dental therapeutic approach that establishes the link between the mouth and the rest of the body, physical, organic, and psycho-affective. It is the result of research and clinical observations carried out since 1984 by two dentists. It is an experimental science based on the clear observation of phenomena whose repetitiveness has been analyzed as convincing.
These observations have allowed the establishment that oral balance is the expression of the overall balance of the individual and more broadly of their affective, cultural, social environment... This therapeutic approach relies on functional dental techniques. It allows treating the entire range of dental and facial dysmorphisms while almost always avoiding tooth extraction. When the patient restores oral balance, the overall balance is restored upstream (posture and muscular problems, back pain, headaches, ENT pathologies, asthma, concentration difficulties, nervous child, depression...).
It allows the patient to invest in their own treatment. The name "dentosophy" comes from the combination of the Latin word "dens", meaning tooth, and the Greek word "sophia", which means wisdom. It literally means "wisdom of the teeth".
"Scientific hypotheses are necessary for the very progress, they are the essential motor of research, which is ultimately only verification and refutation of hypotheses." (Claude Bernard)
It is within this framework that Dentosophy is inscribed, as a method and result of thirty years of observations.
Fundamental Principle
From the beginning of life, the mouth is physically shaped by vital functions - respiration, swallowing, sucking-chewing, phonation, which are thus at the heart of the dental dynamics.
Our Observations
- Disturbances of vital functions or their correction have an impact on all levels: physical, organic, psychological, emotional, behavioral...
- Systematically, we observe that an appropriate stimulation of the mouth by dental acts and appropriate exercises (focused on the rehabilitation of vital functions) gives the patient the ability to create the oral form that reflects their overall balance. And this, regardless of their age or dental condition.
- The observations and experiments made over the past thirty years in different dental practices have led us to adopt this dual postulate as the basis of our work: "A person's psyche is entirely imprinted in their mouth" and conversely, "Any transformation of the oral region has an impact on their psyche."
Dental Logic and Spirit of Our Method
- Dentosophy is the theoretical culmination of our treatment method, which continues to enrich itself regularly with precise insights into dental logic.
- Following this logic, every event in the oral and dental area (natural, accidental, therapeutic...) has a global impact on the patient, in the sense of balance or imbalance.
- In the case of imbalance, compensations are automatically put in place at all levels to restore a semblance of balance. This creates permanent efforts (unconscious) that generate the most diverse pains: muscular, articulatory, bony, organic, mental, emotional, behavioral, etc...
- Within this method, all therapeutic acts contribute to the emergence of oral balance, which leads to the disappearance of compensations and promotes harmony on all levels.
Oral Balance and Maturity
A balanced mouth transmits and reflects the patient's overall balance. An unbalanced mouth presents structural defects and generally a lack of development in the three dimensions (anteroposterior, vertical, transverse).
Treating the overall and structural aspects of the mouth is crucial because it allows the other criteria of oral balance to be established. The growth of the three dimensions being interdependent, the work is carried out in the three spatial planes according to new concepts developed in the trainings. The goal is to allow the oral region to reach, at the end of treatment, the harmonious development planned by nature, the disappearance of muscular tensions being one of the indicators of the progress of the therapy.
Correcting and continuing the development of the mouth interrupted during its growth provides new information and possibilities on all levels of existence. It allows the patient to compensate for a lack of maturity (physical, emotional, psychological, behavioral...). This process is pedagogical: through it, the patient can gain autonomy.
The Therapy
It is based on the fact that every human being has a potential for balance that they never lose because their deep nature is "Balance". The expression of this balance is most often thwarted by the unconscious self-limitations (psychological and physical) set up by the patient in response to their lived experience. The essential role of the dentist is to facilitate the lifting of these limitations by guiding the patient to the end of their oral growth (which allows the repositioning of the teeth). The practitioner has a clear vision of the goal to achieve from the beginning of the treatment thanks to the universal rules of the balance of the stomatognathic system*. To achieve this, they have material tools (functional dental rehabilitation devices, prostheses if necessary...) and immaterial tools (listening, attention, perseverance, structure, capacity for adaptation, spirit of decision and the courage to put it into practice...). The appropriate use of these tools, in respect of each person's rhythm, allows the patient to release their natural capacities for self-healing. These capacities are such that no one can be excluded from the total or partial benefit of the method.
- The stomatognathic system includes the teeth, muscles (including the tongue, lips, cheeks), bones: maxilla, mandible, ATM.
